Make books come alive
It is not enough just to say the words. The words, characters and stories have to come alive. Use different voices for different characters. Change the volume of your voice and your reading speed to give effect and draw the children in to what you are reading. Children enjoy being able to take part after a short time and they love the funny bits. You can both have a good time.
Point to the pictures. Illustrators of children’s books are brilliant people. Their attention to detail is often amazing! Talk about what is happening in the pictures. There will often be detail in the pictures that is not in the words. Noticing these details adds to the enjoyment of the story. Have fun, make noise and interact.
Teach your children to love books. Read to your children every day. If we get it right in the first three years we get it right for life! Why would you want your children to have anything but the best opportunities for their future? The best time to start reading aloud to a baby is the day it is born (or even before, as an unborn baby’s hearing begins to develop six weeks after conception).
“Sometimes it falls upon a generation to be great.
You can be that generation. Let your greatness blossom.”
- Nelson Mandela
